Deforestation is the greatest driver of biodiversity loss in the tropics. GLUE researchers have a long history of tracking risks for forests and biodiversity and working to leverage this information to inform decision-making by companies, environmental groups, and governments. We have identified cattle production within protected areas across Brazil and tracked the supply chain links to help companies and policymakers reduce this risk. We have also worked to track all agricultural expansion across the tropics, and to map the congruence between biodiversity and carbon stocks to help inform policy. We have a new project to focus on high biodiversity regions and leverage public and supply chain governance to strengthen protection in these exceptionally important parts of the Amazon in Peru, Brazil and Colombia.
